Credit ratings are assessments prepared by specialized agencies on the ability of companies and governments to honor their financial commitments within an agreed-upon period. They are relative assessments that compare the credit risks of debt issuers.
In the case of banks, the agencies assess liquidity, capitalization, profitability and credit quality ratios, among other relevant metrics for assessing the risk of financial institutions.
